One of them occurred in the 16th century, when Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim – better known as Paracelsus – visited the Neydharting healing moor in Upper Austria. What he found there would profoundly shape his beliefs about the healing power of nature. The connection between Paracelsus and the Healing Mud of Neydharting is still alive today – and forms the philosophical foundation of Neydharting's Heilmoor products.

Who was Paracelsus?

Paracelsus (1493–1541) is considered one of the most important physicians, alchemists, and natural philosophers of the Middle Ages. He was far ahead of his time: while the medicine of his era was still heavily influenced by ancient teachings, Paracelsus insisted on observing nature itself and learning from it. His famous saying – "Nature is the best pharmacy" – remains a guiding principle of naturopathy to this day. Paracelsus was convinced that every illness has a natural cause and therefore a natural cure must also be possible.

Paracelsus and the Neydharting Healing Moor – The Encounter

The Heilmoor Neydharting has been documented since 1348 – long before Paracelsus visited it. However, it was only through his work with the moor and its properties that the Neydhartinger Moor became known in scholarly circles. Paracelsus recognized the moor's potential as a natural remedy and described his observations in his writings. He saw the moor as an example of what he called "Arcanum" – a hidden treasure of nature that can benefit humanity if one knows how to use it correctly.

A philosophy that endures to this day

The Philosophy of Paracelsus Respect for nature, observation instead of dogma, and healing from natural sources – this remains the foundation of Neydharting's healing peat products to this day. Since 1948, the peat has been responsibly managed by the Neydharting family, the nature reserve has been cared for, and the tradition of peat healing has been passed down. Scientific studies by Prof. Dr. W. Ziechmann and Dr. D. Strauch in recent decades have confirmed many of the traditional applications and documented the biochemical properties of humic substances.

Time period

Milestone

1348

First documented mention of the Neydhartinger Moor

16th Century

Visit and Description by Paracelsus

1948

Start of modern management by the Neydharting family

1997

Scientific Study of Humic Substances (Dr. D.
